Deciding on the right SCM solution is one of the most crucial decisions a company can make. One new factor that many businesses are taking into account is that the whole idea of keeping up with the Jones's by implementing software that conforms strictly to best practices might be a bit outdated. Best practices have been widely touted by many sofware vendors as the right way to implement a SCM system and for good reason. There are many software companies that have gotten fat on revenue earned by selling the same technology over and over again. When the customer tries to innovate they are told that "modifying the system would make it hard to upgrade later". Advances in Internet communications, model driven architecture and open source are making it possible to develop and maintain specialized functionality in a shorter cycle time. MDA or model driven architecture allows systems to be rapidly upgraded as technology changes without the need to rebuild or reprogram the configured business logic.
